Little University
Denver Public Library, Colo.
Innovation Synopsis
Little University provides a play-based learning opportunity to families with children ages birth through preschool of varied socio-economic backgrounds. Children build vocabulary, practice narrative skills and explore social-emotional learning weekly. Once a month caregivers are invited to stay after the program for a parent learning session called Little U 102.
Challenge/Opportunity
Little University provides an alternative to traditional storytimes. Families that might find traditional storytimes irrelevant or redundant can attend early learning opportunities that go beyond a traditional storytime. At the same time, families that might find traditional storytimes intimidating or confusing can attend these play-based early learning programs, which do not require a command of the English language nor an understanding of American culture to participate in successfully.
Key Elements of Innovation
The series, now in its fourth year, changes offerings weekly. Over the course of a year, participants are exposed to such activities as: parent-child yoga, soccer-based physical literacy, ukulele lessons, healthy cooking classes and live creature interactions. During Little U 102 sessions, parents learn important childhood development information such as how children learn to read and write, healthy recipes, child first aid and CPR and kindergarten readiness skills.
Achieved Outcomes
The more learning experiences children are exposed to during early childhood, the more likely they are to succeed in school. Little University provides a regularly-scheduled, free early learning series, which ensures families have access to 52 learning opportunities every year. Caregivers often do not have easy access to in-depth information about how children learn until children are enrolled in preschool programs. Little U 102 provides access to this information on a regular basis.
