Lowriders at the Library
Contra Costa County Library
Innovation Synopsis
The San Pablo Library partnered with the local lowrider car club, the Outsiders, to host a community resource event and lowrider car show to celebrate Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month. The event featured vaccinations, games and crafts, face painting, free books, library card sign-ups, Halloween treats and lowrider cars.
Challenge/Opportunity
The pandemic left many in the San Pablo community struggling for necessities while COVID case numbers skyrocketed. Many Latinx/Hispanic families in the area, especially recent immigrants, were not readily taking advantage of community resources due to language barriers, work schedules, and distrust of government organizations. The library is often seen as an institution that is not available to Spanish speakers or the Latinx/Hispanic community. The family-friendly event was designed to help build trust.
Key Elements of Innovation
The car club brought 25 lowriders to the free, outdoor event. Visitors could take photos with the cars and chat with the owners and in some cases sit in the driver’s seat of the car. The owner’s held a hopping contest where the hydraulic system on each car is featured and some offered Halloween treats. The library offered library card sign-ups, book giveaways, crafts and games, and information about online tutoring services in English and Spanish. County Health Services was also on hand offering COVID-19 vaccinations.
Achieved Outcomes
The 2022 lowrider event brought more than 1400 people to the library. Staff issued 85 new library cards in four hours and shared information about the library with hundreds of guests. Health Services provided 38 first doses of the COVID vaccine. Thanks to the success of the program, the City of San Pablo has pledged $1,500 in support of the next Lowrider at the Library event.
