Research has shown that AR/VR technology can make learning and studying more immersive, effective and exciting. But not all youth have access to pricey gear that provides 3-D technology. As Broward County Library positions itself as a learning center for the digital age, it launched a pilot program to lend high-tech gear to customers, including AR/VR MERGE Cubes and Headsets, which provide access to 3-D technology that enhances classroom instruction and independent learning.

MERGE Cubes and Headsets open up an amazing world of 3-D learning, exploring and play that engages the imagination and provides an immersive, interactive experience which includes a curated selection of educational, youth-friendly VR, AR and 360° videos. These include content from trusted sources such as NASA, National Geographic and Disney. MERGE Cubes can be used with apps like Galactic Explorer and Anatomy/AR that allow users to view realistic 3-D models of space and the human body that bring science to life.

Achieved outcomes, in addition to a steady increase in circulation in the Cubes and Headsets since the program was launched in late 2018/early 2019 include the introduction and use of MERGE gear in Broward County Public Schools and extensive national and local media coverage in Library Journal, CNET and other publications. The pilot program is part of a larger “Gear to Go” Broward County Library initiative that won a 2019 National Association of Counties Achievement Award for innovative county government programs.
