Modern Adult Programs (MAPs): Finding Your Place in the Community

Loudoun County Public Library, Va.

Innovation Synopsis

Modern Adult Programs (MAPs) — an “active” programming initiative focused on patrons in their twenties and thirties — is designed to attract new library users, spotlight library materials and online resources, and build and maintain community partnerships.

Challenge/Opportunity

The mission statement of Loudoun County Public Library includes providing free and equal access to a full variety of library resources to enhance the quality of life and meet the cultural interests of the entire community. Currently, LCPL has an underserved demographic of adults in their twenties and thirties, which makes up 26 percent of the Loudoun County population. While the local economy is thriving, the future depends on millennials, who are seeking more cultural amenities and activities than suburban Loudoun County currently offers.

Key Elements of Innovation

Proposed and planned by a group of dedicated staff, this initiative launched in 2015. MAPs focuses on fun, social, hands-on programming relevant to Millennial interests: Nostalgia/Pop culture, Life skills, Gaming, Fitness, DIY, Trivia, Photography, Cooking, Hands on Art and Karaoke. Strategy gaming and art classes have been particularly popular. In July 2016, the Library held a special after-hours Midsummer Night’s Prom, and in October, the second annual Halloween Ball will be held. Funded by a grant from the Loudoun Library Foundation, MAPs is also collaborating with businesses throughout Loudoun County, Loudoun Economic Development, and the Loudoun Young Professionals group.

Achieved Outcomes

Adults in their twenties and thirties will feel included in the services and programs that LCPL provides. These adults will share in educational and social experiences by participating in programs and engaging with other members of the community. We will continue with programs that have been popular, including strategy gaming and art classes, and try new programs through collaboration and innovation. Through our MAPs programs, participants will engage in social activities with patrons in their age demographic and LCPL will build and maintain community relationships with businesses throughout the county. By targeting an underserved demographic, LCPL will build advocacy for the library system.
