Momotaro Puppet Show
Nashville Public Library, Tenn.
Innovation Synopsis
Take a mystical journey through the heart of Japan with Wishing Chair Productions, the library's full-time, resident performing artist troupe. Wishing Chair made Bunraku puppets to take their audience on an adventure with Momotaro and his companions in a tale of bravery, unity and triumph over adversity.
Challenge/Opportunity
Wishing Chair Productions partnered with cultural institutions like the Nashville Symphony and the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Drawing on Nashville’s own talented musicians and theater professionals enables the troupe to bring each of their chosen stories to life with wonderful music and inventive storytelling. In close partnership with the Japanese Consulate and the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival, NPL built a show focused on Japanese culture.
Key Elements of Innovation
The director, Bret Wilson chose to keep the soundtrack's narration in Japanese (with generous guidance from the Japanese Consulate). English subtitles are also projected onto a screen. The show is an immersive retelling featuring a traditional hand-painted backdrop, original soundtrack and exquisite hand-carved Bunraku puppets (a Japanese puppetry style in which puppeteers maneuver the puppets directly).
Achieved Outcomes
Wishing Chair Productions has offered 13 performances at our Main Library since the launch in May 2018 with an audience count of roughly 685 people. We have offered nine presentations on our traveling Puppet Truck since the launch in May 2018 with an audience count of roughly 350 people.
