My Library Rockin’ Original S@YL Music Video

Prince George's County Memorial Library System, Md.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

The Innovative Technology Team from the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System created an original rap song and music video featuring Librarian-Rapper Kaneisha Matthews and library mascot Sneaks the Cat encouraging community youth to participate in special Summer at Your Library (S@YL) events and the annual reading challenge.

Challenge/Opportunity

We want to show our youth that their local library is a culturally relevant part of the community and not just a place to get books — that it is a center for enrichment, engagement and education. We want our local youth to stay motivated to read, but also connected to their communities and engaged in thoughtful activities. This video positions their local library to be a destination to fulfill those goals.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Innovative Technology Team storyboarded the video concept in alignment with the Summer at Your Library Theme: Libraries Rock. Next, we wrote original music and lyrics. We then recorded the song at the Fairmount Heights Branch Library DREAM Lab maker space. Next we recorded video footage featuring library staff at locations throughout the system. Finally, we embedded the music video onto social media as a kickoff to our Summer at Your Library registration launch.

Achieved Outcomes

The music video has since gone viral in the Prince George’s County Community. With over 5,000 views the video has created a conversation about our summer programs and the cultural relevance of public libraries. Statistically, this video post has achieved skyrocketing engagement measured in comments, likes, shares and views. Upon reviewing initial statistics we anticipate registration for our Summer at Your Library reading challenge to be significantly higher than the previous year.
