PGCMLS Builds and Hard Hat Librarian
Prince George's County Memorial Library System, Md.
Innovation Synopsis
In 2020, PGCMLS focused on deepening the community's engagement with capital improvement projects by creating a new microsite called "PGCMLS Builds" that ensures transparency. The ongoing Hard Hat Librarian video series, featuring Michael Gannon, is a feature of PGCMLS' construction projects and has grown to help promote safe practices during COVID-19.
Challenge/Opportunity
PGCMLS always has multiple active construction and renovation projects and the community let the library know that they wanted to be more involved in tracking the progress of projects. PGCMLS' Digital Services and Support Services departments were tasked with creating an interactive and inviting platform and series of assets for engaging customers and stakeholders in the multi-year evolution of projects, supporting their advocacy efforts and ensuring they have opportunities to participate in these long-term construction projects.
Key Elements of Innovation
The PGCMLS Builds microsite tracks major capital projects from the feasibility study stage to construction and opening, providing the public with access to plans, an overview of key features, timeline updates, contracting opportunities and fun and engaging Hard Hat Librarian videos that help provide an insider's look at the stages of projects. The Hard Hat series also lent itself to engaging customers with important safety topics during COVID-19, including social distancing, hand washing and proper wear of face masks.
Achieved Outcomes
The PGCMLS Builds webpage has improved relationships with customers and stakeholders (including the county, municipal officials and local businesses) with accurate, up-to-date tracking of projects and opportunities for engagement. The web page is an important tool for advocacy and resulted in more press coverage for capital projects. The Hard Hat Librarian series enhances the public's experience in learning about PGCMLS construction projects. It has also provided much needed levity during COVID-19, while also being educational.
