Project Welcome

Broward County Library, Fla.

Equity and Inclusion | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

Project Welcome welcomes newcomers and new learners of the English language to Broward County, informs them of the important resources Broward County Library has to offer and supports them on their path towards literacy, economic prosperity and a sense of belonging. It targets Spanish, Haitian-Creole and Portuguese speaking families.

Challenge/Opportunity

Florida has the fourth largest number of immigrants in the nation (3.7 million), with Broward County having the fifth largest absolute growth in immigrants in Florida. Among the top immigrant groups, Broward County has the fastest-growing Hispanic population in the state, one of the largest Haitian populations in the country and a large Brazilian population, many of whom feel cut off from the rest of the population by inadequate/nonexistent language, literacy and cultural skills.

Key Elements of Innovation

Project Welcome is divided into two parts: engaging, welcoming and attracting diverse families, and transitioning, building a series of programs and services that ensure family success, including English and citizenship classes and a Welcome Ambassador community mentor program. Through collaborations with partners such as Broward County Public Schools, the Department of Children/Families Refugee Service and U.S. Immigration Services, Project Welcome is developing a series of information programs that identify and build key knowledge areas.

Achieved Outcomes

BCL believes the library should act as an entry point for newcomers to access and become part of their new community. Project Welcome includes programming and services for newcomers that focus on facilitating inclusion and transitioning to life in Broward. Project Welcome will show newcomers that BCL plays an essential role in the community and that it's a safe, welcoming and free place to access resources and services that can make adjusting to their new home easier.
