Quo Vadimus? That’s Easy, We Go into the Future.

Jersey City Free Public Library, N.J.

Health & Wellness | 2020

Innovation Synopsis

COVID-19 caused the Jersey City Free Public Library to pivot from 130 years of in-person service to an online existence. JCFPL leadership and staff transferred their commitment to the community into engaging, online programming. As the pandemic evolved, the library created safety protocols in order to provide physical services to the community.

Challenge/Opportunity

The sudden onset of the pandemic precluded the JCFPL from operation exactly when the need for information, curated content and educational materials became crucial for the population of the city. With few options, the JCFPL staff shifted to online programming. Since portions of the community fall into the digital divide or are economically challenged, the library renewed physical practices when it was safe for staff and patrons. Providing succor while maintaining safe social practices remains of paramount importance.

Key Elements of Innovation

The JCFPL produced 600+ online programs — 100 per month — featuring 12 reoccurring staff members, scholars and civic leaders. Creating 3,500 digital cards, the JCFPL promoted access to audiobooks, e-books and movies from Overdrive, Hoopla and Kanopy. Utilizing physical resources, the library created a curbside pickup system, arranged computer use, established internet hotspots and provided free printing for patrons. The bookmobile circulated more than 2,000 items throughout Jersey City.

Achieved Outcomes

Nimble leadership and adaptive staff produced an online environment to promote use of the JCFPL website, e-books, digital services and audiobooks. Seizing the opportunity to expand the library’s online impact, the library interacted with the community and patrons through live-streaming programs and events on Facebook and Zoom. Expansion of library staff and production capacity will allow the JCFPL to reach a broader, more diverse audience and allow more patrons to utilize physical and digital resources.
