Read Brave: Bringing a City Together Through Story
Saint Paul Public Library, Minn.
Advocacy & Awareness
| 2019
Innovation Synopsis
Read Brave Saint Paul is a citywide, intergenerational reading program focused on community issues. In 2019, our focus issue was housing.
Read Brave is based on the belief that stories are a powerful way to bring people together. Read Brave invites people to read, discuss and even take action on critical issues … all while building relationships
Challenge/Opportunity
Our city is faced with brave decisions to make about many issues — decisions that start with conversations among our residents. When we all read the same books, we all have a common base through which to discuss challenging topics.
The opportunity:
- Engage our community in brave conversations around stories
- Build empathy and awareness around relevant issues
- Bridge differences between generations, cultures and neighborhoods
