Reality Bites
Cedar Rapids Public Library, Iowa
Innovation Synopsis
This program addresses salient national issues such as race, mental illness, immigration and political polarization and presents them in a meaningful way locally to our community. In a three-month series, we learn, discuss and share to take on new information, listen to specialists and have the program spark meaningful dialogue.
Challenge/Opportunity
News outlets often bombard us with soundbites that only glaze over an issue, or present a specific agenda. The news you subscribe to shapes your worldview. This program delves much deeper into an issue. By using primary sources, leading experts in the field and local partners, we look closely at historical context, economic and social constructs and provide a comprehensive view of the issue. We are prepared to be honest, but civil; uncomfortable, but respectful.
Key Elements of Innovation
It's essential to trace the history of the issue; bring in key scholars and studies. It is imperative to engage the audience – ask provocative questions and bring in groups who lend legitimacy to the issues. Issues addressed in the program are complex and much research is needed. It is an ongoing, intensive process, but well worth the work so that community members trust the library and we foster strong relationships with speakers and patrons.
Achieved Outcomes
This program has fostered organic, genuine respect from participants, whilst also building strong partnerships with other nonprofits and community organizations. When community members see an issue that resonates with them, it develops a stronger bond with the library and can offer a sense of sanctuary. This program is also a way to act as a mirror to the community – it evolves with them, for them.
