Request and Read with Express Pickup
Barrie Public Library, Ont.
Innovation Synopsis
Request and Read Express Pickup was offered on three weekdays and Saturdays at both branches with simple steps to get our patrons the library materials they need, on the go! Patrons can simply search the catalogue or call to make a request for library materials. Then they wait for a notification and go online to book their pickup appointment. After that, they can arrive, show their card and READ.
Challenge/Opportunity
Many of our patrons cannot visit the library in-person, so we designed the Request and Read Express Pickup as a perfect solution for seniors, families or those needing to take extra precautions against COVID-19. This service was made available at the curb as a safe and convenient way to get library items.
Key Elements of Innovation
Over the last six months, so much has changed for our community. The library was pleased to offer a variety of safe browsing, borrowing and pickup options so that everyone felt comfortable reading, exploring and learning with us. Access to our digital library with a 60-minute session on our public computers or with your own device and free Wi-Fi. Printing and copy options were available. For those that would rather visit us online, they can simply choose their items, place them on hold and schedule a convenient curbside pickup.
Achieved Outcomes
Request and Read Express Pickup has been well received by our community. With over 196 pickup appointments scheduled since the service started in early June 2020. This positive response indicates that we are meeting a need by offering accessible options to our patrons during the pandemic and beyond. It is anticipated that this service will only expand and develop in the future.
