Rhythm & Tunes
St. Louis County Library, Mo.
Innovation Synopsis
In April 2017 St. Louis County Library received an LSTA grant to create 24 videos to provide access to early literacy skills and techniques in a fun and interactive way. The Missouri State Library was intrigued by this approach and asked for the rights to distribute the videos to all Missouri libraries.
Challenge/Opportunity
Parents love the songs and activities the youth services staff showcase during story-times at the library, but many parents/caregivers have asked for more to use at home. The Rhythm & Tunes activity or movement songs teach young hands how to move – up/down, push/pull, around and around. Having the State Library promote these videos on their website highlights SLCL as a leader in the state.
Key Elements of Innovation
We began shooting the videos in July and drafts were available for editing in September of 2017. After the final versions were approved, we linked the videos to our website and shared them with the State Library for wider distribution.
Achieved Outcomes
Since uploading the videos to our YouTube site, we have received nearly 4,000 views. In April of 2018 we received another LSTA grant to produce and distribute another 16 Rhythm & Tunes videos.
