Riversides: The Capital City Record

Edmonton Public Library, Alberta

Advocacy & Awareness | 2019 | Honorable Mention

Innovation Synopsis

Edmonton Public Library produced a vinyl album, "Riversides," through our local music initiative, Capital City Records. This project inspired excitement for music recording studios in EPL’s new downtown library, strengthened the city's music community, showcased local artists and celebrated the diverse and vibrant talent of Edmonton's music and arts scene.

Challenge/Opportunity

The Capital City Records album demonstrates how the library is a significant player in cultivating the vibrancy and diversity of local arts. The album creates an avenue to support local artists, build and energize community and partnerships and communicate the need for accessible creative spaces such as the music recording studios at EPL’s new revitalized library. This campaign shows how the library serves diverse community needs by providing opportunities for local content creation and access while generating innovative opportunities for local culture and creativity to thrive.

Key Elements of Innovation

"Riversides" is the first vinyl compilation released by a public library. Every element of its production was local. A jury of local experts selected tracks submitted by Edmonton musicians through our digital music platform. EPL partnered with the Edmonton Arts Council to commission local artwork and the album was pressed and sold through local independent businesses. The album was internationally recognized as an official Record Store Day 2019 release and, to celebrate, EPL held a release concert featuring artists on the album.

Achieved Outcomes

126 tracks were submitted by 71 artists. The project was backed by community, business and media partners and has been featured in over a dozen segments on TV, radio and news networks. The release concert sold out and over 30% of the albums and artwork posters sold in the first month, raising $5,965 towards the sound recording studios. "Riversides" has become a piece of Edmonton music history and demonstrated how EPL supports local artists in creating and sharing their work in an innovative way while also exposing the public to exciting local content they may not have heard of before.
