Self-care Toolkit for CML Staff
Columbus Metropolitan Library
Innovation Synopsis
Working in an urban library system can present unique challenges and stressors for library staff, especially front-line workers who frequently assist customers experiencing homelessness, hunger, loneliness, poverty, or mental health concerns. We were determined to answer the question of “How can we support staff in mitigating the stressors common in public service?” Recognizing the importance of self-care in reducing stress and increasing resilience, we curated a Self-care Toolkit. This collection includes assessments, infographics, and informational presentations related to various facets of well-being. Many of these resources were gathered from other urban library systems and leading mental health organizations.
Challenge/Opportunity
In late 2023, while working on a project to analyze security incidents at one of our branches, staff expressed a desire for training and resources to help manage stress and improve their ability to recover from high-stress situations. This echoed feedback we were increasingly hearing from our staff at other locations. We know this challenge is not unique to our system; according to a 2023 OhioNet Library Worker Wellbeing Survey, respondents selected wellness and resiliency training as a key area of “Most valued form of wellbeing support”. A challenge was the sheer amount of information on the topic of self-care, with varying levels of applicability to what our staff were experiencing. Sifting through websites, presentations and videos was frustrating and time-consuming. Staff were overwhelmed with where to start. The information needed to be well-organized with clear descriptions of how to use each tool. Staff also need the ability to access the Toolkit from work or home.
Key Elements of Innovation
The Self-care Toolkit is a curated collection of well-being resources relevant to library staff. The project team focused on vetting and selecting resources addressing the unique needs of public service. The design includes logical naming conventions, concise descriptions of resources, and guidance on how to leverage the tools. An essential element of the Toolkit was the inclusion of assessments to provide insight into their current wellbeing and ideas to improve it, as well as templates to create a personalized self-care plan. The Toolkit also offers suggestions on ways managers can support staff who show signs or stress or self-disclose a need for help, plus ideas to drive awareness of the Toolkit and normalize discussions of mental health. The Self-care Toolkit can be accessed virtually by staff 24/7 and is strategically situated near info about our employee assistance provider, mindfulness app, and full array of mental health resources and medical benefits.
Achieved Outcomes
The Self-care Toolkit launched in March 2024. There has been great interest and excitement for this innovation, resulting in invitations to discuss the Toolkit at manager, department-level and employee resource group (ERG) meetings. Many staff have shared positive feedback. CEO Pat Losinski remarked, “So fabulous. I learned so much myself while reviewing this information. It is a great example of our team caring for each other and creating a culture that makes us all proud of CML and what we stand for! With appreciation, Pat.” Another commentor shared they were enormously proud to work for an organization that recognizes the importance of mental health resources, stating that the document does a beautiful job outlining the purpose of the Toolkit and reminding managers they can play a role in supporting team health. The Self-care Toolkit is an impactful innovation in supporting the well-being of our staff.
