Snow Day Fun Mini-Videos
Lexington Public Library, Ky.
Innovation Synopsis
The Lexington Public Library used short, shareable social media videos to reach students and families on snow days to bring fun, educational activities into the home on days typically thought of as putting a halt to learning.
Challenge/Opportunity
You can always expect at least a few snow days in winter, with children stuck at home and learning put on pause. Even the kids often end up wondering, "What can we do?" The library recognized an opportunity. With its librarians' expertise in literacy and learning and its LPL TV staff's expertise in video production, the library was ideally suited to help make snow days into days that mingled education and fun.
Key Elements of Innovation
In preparation of winter weather, Lexington Public Library staff developed themed activities designed to be fun, engaging and educational. Activities used every day items, ensuring that parents and caregivers had ready access to the materials needed. Library staff presented the activities on social media, releasing a new video for each snow day, to provide educational experiences for students when winter weather prevented them from attending school.
Achieved Outcomes
Snow Day Fun provided parents and children with new ways to make snow days fun and educational. For kids, it kept the learning lighthearted. For parents, it encouraged them to play an active role in their children's education. For the library, it demonstrated the depth of our partnership with parents, not only in our buildings but in their own homes. The videos had 4,276 Twitter impressions, 1,214 Facebook reach and 293 YouTube views.
