Social Work Program
Cambridge Public Library
Innovation Synopsis
With its brand new social work program, the Cambridge Public Library has eliminated barriers to accessing resources and getting patron needs met. Community members can walk into any of CPL's seven locations and get in contact with the library social worker to be connected with resources within a week or two.
Challenge/Opportunity
Many community members feel lost when it comes to seeking support, whether it's because they are intimidated by the vast array of agencies and institutions they need to navigate or simply unsure what they're looking for and whether they're eligible for it. As a result, people do not get their needs adequately met and often fall through the cracks of the system. The CPL social work program provides an accessible option that lessens the stigma of seeking support and connects community members with resources they need.
Key Elements of Innovation
CPL social work is one of only a few dozen similar programs across the U.S. Installing a social worker in the library gives unprecedented access to community members; there is no need for payment, insurance or any other type of hurdle. Patrons can get in touch through phone, email, the CPL website, referral boxes or simply speaking to a library staff member. No matter if someone lacks access to technology or struggles to communicate in writing, there is an avenue for them to get in touch and find the support they need
Achieved Outcomes
Since its inception in July 2021, the social work program has served over 100 patrons with issues ranging from lack of housing to substance use navigation to insurance questions. We have already expanded the program, hiring two social work students to serve more patrons and implement community programming like job application workshops and financial literacy classes. Through continuing interagency collaboration, we seek to maximize patron support.
