SPARK: Libraries and Community Journalism
Anythink Libraries, Colo.
Innovation Synopsis
SPARK, Anythink’s magazine, provides an innovative approach to library marketing. This publication goes beyond traditional library news to offer a wide range of content, serving as a source of community journalism. SPARK is distributed in all Anythink library branches, as well as out in the community and online.
Challenge/Opportunity
Anythink wanted to reinvent its library publication and, in doing so, turned outward for ideas and inspiration. The organization wanted to better reflect the work of the staff, which includes connecting people with ideas that extend beyond the library walls. In an era of declining journalism sources, there is a need for compelling content that serves the community while also highlighting library programs, staff and resources in new and creative ways.
Key Elements of Innovation
SPARK is now an award-winning publication that introduces the community to the library while also serving as a source of local journalism. SPARK features community stories from library customers, local organizations and staff, while also creating connections to library resources and programs. Articles are written by staff and guest writers, and contain a variety of perspectives. Through these articles, SPARK forges new relationships with the public and with organizations that develop into library partnerships.
Achieved Outcomes
SPARK has won multiple awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for writing and design. New library partnerships with organizations have been forged through the magazine’s interviews. A recent survey found that the majority of readers learn something new when reading the issue, and there are many anecdotes of readers discovering the library’s services through SPARK. One customer who was featured on the cover of SPARK described it as “life-changing" and inspired her to showcase her art in a public show.
