In the planning phase of our capital bond project, we heard loud and clear that children’s spaces ought to be a top priority. Aside from the children’s books and a playful rug, there was no obvious indicator that the former space was for children. We know that studies show that play-and-learn spaces in libraries are associated with increases in caregiver and child conversation which can support language, literacy and STEM skills. A new rug just wasn’t going to cut it — we needed to create a destination.

Each playspace is an access point to a whimsical alternate reality featuring a combination of opportunities for big body play, quiet reading and imagination. Large-scale elements add a fantasy vibe while the materials used give the space a handmade feel that kids can relate to. Local landmarks and geology form the background for a cast of local fauna including moose, marmot, turkey, osprey and...Sasquatch. “Easter eggs” in each playspace link the network together and encourage exploration of libraries further afield.

Families will have a safe, free, nearby and indoor place to take their children. This doesn’t currently exist in Spokane. These destination playspaces will plant the seed for a love of libraries for generations to come. Children will get to exercise key social, cognitive, organizational, physical and emotional skills and connect with their caregivers. Toddler areas will help develop fine motor skills. Large elements encourage the development of gross motor skills. Whimsical elements encourage cooperative play.
