Day home providers face transportation barriers, which can prevent children from reaching traditional library programs. Another challenge is that library staff cannot enter a private residence to deliver a program. The innovative solution to this situation was to turn a vehicle into a purpose-built program space. Story Truck was designed for a young audience; features include kid-height access to books, comfortable carpet, materials to tell stories (including a whiteboard and felt board) and toys on board.

Story Truck currently serves children in day homes within low-income neighbourhoods, where a need exists for high-quality literacy programs. At a Story Truck visit, a library employee delivers a 45-minute program, and provides early literacy resources to day home operators. Handouts are left behind for parents and caregivers. Another key element is visiting the same day home four times, which allows library staff to build connections. Additionally, a deposit collection is left for the month.

Since launching as a pilot project in Spring 2017, Story Truck has connected with over 1000 participants (including kids and day home providers) through 108 day home visits. The program was expanded in Fall 2017 and is growing again, with a new Story Truck expected to launch this fall (2018). Feedback from staff delivering the program and day home providers is very positive, and kids greatly look forward to the visits.
