Tech Access
Kansas City Public Library, Mo.
Innovation Synopsis
Kansas City Public Library navigates various barriers for Kansas City adults on the wrong side of the digital divide through Tech Access — a collection of resources that enabled over 1,300 digital learning interactions in 2018 as adult patrons pursued their digital literacy goals.
Challenge/Opportunity
Everyone’s challenge is different. Offering classes alone cannot answer the needs of each patron. Whether a senior citizen want to learn how to use her smartphone, a low-income patron needs to create an email account so he can complete an online job application or a professional wants to brush up on his excel skills — Tech Access is flexible and relevant to everyone.
Key Elements of Innovation
Tech Access resources include:
- Tech Coach volunteers — college students, retirees or corporate employees — who provide a diverse skill set, expanding capacity to provide quality training
- Mobile computer lab — enabling digital training anywhere
- Community partnerships — increased impact by offering training at community sites including low-income housing complexes, community centers and assisted living facilities for seniors
- Learning pathways — adaptable curriculum is used for one-on-on sessions, classes or learning circles meaning participants can choose a learning path that works for them
Achieved Outcomes
KCPL’s digital literacy training programs prepare participants for jobs, more advanced education programs or ease hardships caused by lack of basic tech skills. Program participants are expected to achieve the following targeted outcomes:
- Gain basic digital literacy skills
- Become more confident in using and learning about technology
- Apply new digital skills to real life
- Continue to engage in learning new digital skills
