Innovation Synopsis
The library regularly brings dozens of teen volunteers to help operate the Summer Reading Program. As COVID-19 cases continued to climb, the teen services librarian created the Teen Library Ambassador Program, a new way for teens to work with the library, promote library services to their peers, create digital content and get service hours.
Challenge/Opportunity
The library's Youth Services team anticipated lower than normal enrollments for the annual Summer Reading Program due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was determined that teen volunteers weren't needed to assist staff with prize distribution and other duties. The teen services librarian changed the traditional volunteer model and created the Teen Library Ambassador Program. This group of teens worked independently to create digital content the library could use on social media to promote resources and services to teens.
Key Elements of Innovation
The teen services librarian created an application teens could fill out to be an Ambassador. The group used Discord to communicate throughout the summer, and also share content ideas and finished projects. Ambassadors created digital content that promoted programming, resources and services at the library. These included blog posts, graphic design projects, digital ads and more. Content was shared throughout the summer on social media and was later used to populate the teen resource page on the library's website.
Achieved Outcomes
Content created paved the way for the library's Digital Services Teams to create a designated teen page on the library's website. The Ambassadors promoted the library to their peers and provided staff with valuable insight into current teen interests. The teen services librarian chose to make the program a year-long initiative. One parent told the library that she saw her teen's skills in time and task management improve, and enjoyed how practical the program was in encouraging teens to develop workplace-relevant skills.
