The Kaleidoscope Magazine

St. Charles City-County Library, Mo.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2019

Innovation Synopsis

Knowing that the library’s class and event schedule is an important publication for attracting new customers to the library and helping seasoned customers maintain connections there, the St. Charles City-County Library redesigned its bimonthly publication to mimic the look and feel of any popular magazine.

Challenge/Opportunity

For many customers, the regularly published schedule of events is a mainstay for helping them find the classes that they love. For new customers, it’s an introduction to the resources and services that the library provides. But if they never open a classes and events schedule, customers may not discover all of the ways they can learn, grow and connect with the community.

Key Elements of Innovation

Over the past year, the St. Charles City-County Library decided to rethink its classes and events schedule. The marketing department studied popular magazines, then updated the schedule’s format, scope and design. In addition to a list of classes arranged by targeted audience and topic, The Kaleidoscope magazine has evolved to include articles about people in the community, advertisements for library services and high-quality photos of real customers, all with the glossy look and feel of a newsstand publication.

Achieved Outcomes

Customers eagerly anticipate new issues of The Kaleidoscope. They read stories about how the library has affected the lives of people. They see photos of library classes filled with familiar faces. They browse hundreds of events for all ages and interests. The Kaleidoscope is displayed at every branch, at community outreach events and at presentations large and small. It is free and available to anyone. The Kaleidoscope is a representation of what our library is, what it does and all that it offers.
