The Labs @ CLP Summer Skills Intensives
Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Innovation Synopsis
A highlight of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's year-round Labs programming, Labs Summer Skills Intensives offer teens a chance to explore creative learning workshops using technology. Free and open to teens, the Intensives are guided by principles of connected learning and built-in collaboration.
Challenge/Opportunity
Teens often are at the library for extended periods, especially during out-of-school times. In the absence of engaging activities, learning loss and behavior issues occur. By offering opportunities to connect young people with literacy and learning, along with their passions and skills, the library becomes a transformative and positive place. Intensives build a network of caring adults and an inclusive and creative environment. Teens collect additions to their resumes, library skills badges and new friendships.
Key Elements of Innovation
Each year, teens’ interests serve as the inspiration for the Intensives’ subjects and curriculum. Past workshops have included: photography; oil painting; music video creation; game design; audio recording; beat making and more. Not only do teens get the opportunity to learn and grow alongside musicians, filmmakers and graphic designers, so do our staff. At CLP much of the staff development using technology is owed to the co-learning of library staff and the artists supporting The Labs Summer Skills Intensives.
Achieved Outcomes
Outcomes include: Teen participants are compensated for the time and effort put into the Intensive with $100. An artist or subject expert who works in the city and leads the week-long workshop and helps teens deepen their knowledge base. Teens develop both creative projects and a resume to reflect this experience. Teen mentors are hired and paid by the library to support their peers through the Intensive. Young people are introduced to new opportunities in 21st century careers in a fun and supportive environment.
