The More We Get Together
Cedar Rapids Public Library, Iowa
Innovation Synopsis
The More We Get Together brings adults from The Gardens of Cedar Rapids assisted living facility together with school-aged children to participate in themed inter-generational experiences at the library.
Challenge/Opportunity
Attracting our senior population to come to the library for programming opportunities has always been difficult. In addition, offering true intergenerational programming that attracts participants beyond parents with their children is a unique challenge. The library wanted to find a creative way to expand programming for seniors and school-aged children that respected and celebrated the experiences both populations brought to the table.
Key Elements of Innovation
By working directly with The Gardens of Cedar Rapids, an assisted living facility, the library was able to ensure a consistent and excited group of senior citizen friends at each program. The public also attends and we see seniors and children come together to learn and share. Each week is built around specific themes, from Folk Song Sing-Alongs, to Pet Rock Exchanges, to Art Critiques. Each week offers unique experiences, but the sharing of stories and experiences between the generations is the bedrock of the program.
Achieved Outcomes
Senior citizens involved in inter-generational programs feel a greater sense of usefulness to society. It improves the well-being of older adults and reduces the stigma associated with aging and discrimination against older adults. By enabling older adults to mentor or tutor children and youth, intergenerational programs have the potential to improve students’ academic, behavioral, social-economic and motivational outcomes. Engagement and attendance has grown from six to 60 participants in the first month.
