There Is Always Another Way
Prince William Public Libraries
Innovation Synopsis
When you fall in the abyss you need someone from the top to throw you at least a rope so you can escape and try not to fall again. In 2022, Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) established a powerful collaboration with the Prince William County Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) showing young adults that the there is still another way.
Challenge/Opportunity
Young adults at JDC are, due to their personal histories, at a significant disadvantage when applying for jobs after leaving the detention facility. This makes them vulnerable, leads to further life struggles, and poses a risk of recidivism. A decent job and supportive work environment are often all these young people need to stay on a path of successful life free of mistakes leading to incarceration. To help solve this problem, PWPL extended its Learning Circle program to JDC.
Key Elements of Innovation
PWPL had an existing program for young adults with underdeveloped skills – Learning Circle. However, since JDC residents cannot visit libraries, PWPL decided to bring the program to them. It was a first of its kind collaboration between PWPL and JDC, and PWPL secured a grant to support it. A local professional and career development non-profit and a local recruiting and staffing firm helped students learn about skills needed for a variety of jobs, create resumes, and learn best practices for applying for positions.
Achieved Outcomes
Students had the opportunity to learn from professionals, talk about concrete steps for getting employed, and explore available jobs. “The students were taught how to be goal oriented and tap into their strengths, skills, and talents to put their best foot forward. They also received much needed professional contacts for when they leave JDC to continue to help them gain employment,” said JDC literacy coach. Building upon success, PWPL is now extending this collaboration to Prince William Adult Detention Center.
