Video Storytimes

Contra Costa County Library, Calif.

Education - Children & Adults | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

The Contra Costa County Library offers Video Storytimes through the library’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/user/theccclib. Each playlist includes songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories. A new video is available each month throughout the rest of the year.

Challenge/Opportunity

All 26 branches of the Contra Costa County Library have storytime where parents and kids can learn and practice skills that are fundamental to early literacy. However, some families are not able to attend storytime at their local library. These videos allow parents and children to enjoy storytime on the go, at their own convenience on a variety of devices.

Key Elements of Innovation

Many staff came together to produce all the elements of the Video Storytimes. Youth services librarians from across the library system were recruited to perform and edit the content. The library partnered with Contra Costa Television to use their recording studio, and then created a logo and marketing plan.

Achieved Outcomes

Storytimes are a fun and important way for young children to learn and reinforce early literacy skills. Now that these storytimes are available online, more children will have more access to practicing these skills such as, singing, reading, playing and talking. It is expected and anticipated that these storytimes will reach children and families who are too busy or whose schedules don't allow them to attend live storytimes at their local libraries.
