Virtual All Staff Training Day
Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries
Innovation Synopsis
Our annual All Staff Training went virtual this year with an innovative platform and a focus on building resilience, personal growth and connection. Using the HopIn platform, staff were able to come to a central virtual location from wherever they were. There were networking and team-building opportunities along with professional development.
Challenge/Opportunity
The challenge was to continue our tradition of excellent staff training in a virtual environment when staff members were tired of online training. Everyone was suffering from pandemic fatigue and struggling with increased stress in a COVID-19 world — both personally and professionally. With staff members across four counties and over 4,200 square miles, there had been little opportunity to connect together and current restrictions made coming together in person impractical.
Key Elements of Innovation
We selected the HopIn virtual platform because of its emphasis on networking and connection with video chats. When selecting speakers, we chose light and fun topics that would benefit all staff such as building resilience, healthy and delicious meals, yoga and team-building games. We paired these with topics that focused on library services/partnerships that had practical applications such as accessibility for deaf children, the Washington State Talking Books and Braille Library and Seeing Through Your Patrons’ eyes.
Achieved Outcomes
Staff left the training feeling empowered and refreshed. When polled, 92% said they would attend a virtual staff training like this again and the keynote and sessions had an average of 94% satisfaction. Comments from staff indicated that they appreciated the effort to allow for this connection and training. They learned from the topics and will use the tools they gained. They enjoyed a goodie bag filled with relevant handouts, snacks and a small gift. At the end of the day staff felt valued, recognized and encouraged.
