Virtual Community Exhibit: Artists of the Gorge

Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries

Advocacy & Awareness | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

In 2020, Artists of the Gorge entered its 41st year as a juried exhibition for local artists. This signature event for our community, library, and Friends’ group traditionally includes an after-hours reception and month-long display of winning artwork. We transitioned the event and display to one entirely virtual in 2020 and a hybrid model in 2021.

Challenge/Opportunity

All key portions of the regular event were not possible as only staff were allowed in the library due to COVID-19 protocols. The submissions, jurying process, display of the exhibit and reception all were affected. Using online tools and curbside delivery of artwork, we were able to continue in 2020 by having the exhibit online.

Key Elements of Innovation

Early into the pandemic, we thought we would be able to have the exhibit (traditionally held in October) open enough to let the jurors in to select the pieces, hang the show and let a few patrons attend at a time. Submissions were taken over the summer by staff at the gallery door, and then posted online. As the deadline approached and the pandemic only got worse, we pivoted to an entirely online exhibit. Every piece was displayed online and prize winners were selected by our patrons' votes online.

Achieved Outcomes

Our goal was to keep patrons engaged in this long running community event despite the pandemic. Submissions were half of typical, but engagement was higher. Every artist was grateful this tradition continued, and every piece was included in the exhibit. Thanks to the online distribution, patrons across the FVRL’s service area were able to participate and experience the work of our local artists. In 2021, we offered a hybrid model with a physical and online exhibit, and voting for the People’s Choice award virtually.
