Challenge/Opportunity

The public library often serves as a lifeline to those most in need. The Mandel Public Library’s in-person Homework Center created improvement in students’ schoolwork, attitude and confidence. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program shifted to a virtual setting while the library was closed in hopes of continuing to enrich the lives of local students. Expanding the program to a virtual platform has significantly increased the program’s effectiveness and provided this service to at-home learners.

Key Elements of Innovation

As the school district shifted to online learning, the library adapted to meet the after-school educational needs of students. The library’s goals were to aid with the transition to virtual learning and offer tutoring services specific to each student’s needs. These goals were met by employing certified teachers from local schools with experience in the Google platform and with the county curriculums. The Virtual Homework Centers are a vital service, particularly for students who do not have access to costly tutoring.

Achieved Outcomes

Virtual Homework Center can assist thousands of children and parents throughout the year. The teacher is a liaison to local schools to request information on special assignments. Access to online resources is a key component of the Virtual Homework Center to promote digital literacy skills. A student may pass a test, raise their grades or graduate because of the Virtual Homework Center. These become a part of the students’ learning experience, carrying them through their education and into a productive adulthood.
