Virtual Reading Buddies

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library

Education - Children & Adults | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

During the pandemic, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library pivoted to offer virtual reading buddy appointments. Library staff members are paired with a child for a semester to practice reading together. Library staff members share their screen using a digital platform and digital Library e-books.

Challenge/Opportunity

Children need one on one support with reading, and need time to connect and talk with others, especially while the world is limited in communication and contact. The child's language, fluency and comprehension levels improve, as well as parent and child social and emotional well-being.

Key Elements of Innovation

Virtual reading buddies began with five staff members trying out 15 virtual appointments per week in April 2020. It has since grown to over 65 appointments per week, utilizing staff across all library departments in our system.

Achieved Outcomes

  • Library has attracted 3,271 program attendees since 2020.
  • Numerous stories of impact and survey data from parents/caregivers indicating that their child's confidence in reading has improved as a result of these sessions, including their child's fluency and comprehension skills as well.
