Virtual Reality Technology

Prince George's County Memorial Library System, Md.

Education - Children & Adults

Innovation Synopsis

Challenge/Opportunity

PGCMLS and its partners — the Maryland State Department of Education's Division of Library Development and Services (DLDS), FutureMakers and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) — offer a unique opportunity for families and youth to engage in STEM-VR activities that develop their invention literacy. Hundreds of VR fans participated in these fun, hands-on, community roadshows, showcasing VR technology and its application in gaming, education and entertainment. At the VR camps, youth design virtual environments using the Unity game engine, Open Source Virtual Reality (OSVR) software and OSVR Hacker Development Kits (HDKs) headsets that others may visit. These creative technologies enhance communication, collaboration and independent learning.

Key Elements of Innovation

Key elements of the Virtual Reality Technology Summer 2016:

  1. Funds for this program were provided by IMLS through the DLDS.
  2. PGCMLS also partnered with FutureMakers to showcase VR Technology, creating a computer-generated 3D experience at the roadshows, camps and a VR design competition called VR Jam.
  3. Three roadshows introduced the VR Technology with hands-on stations.
  4. VR camps explored VR technology and allowed youth to design their own VR places and games.

Achieved Outcomes

Virtual Reality Technology proved to be a multi-generational experience, attracting young and old alike. The Library's free events were a multi-cultural attraction and bridged the economic divide, making affordability a non-issue for gaining access to VR technology. STEM skills were developed through the campers' VR game creations. The Library plans to purchase VR Tech resources and continue to be offer them as ongoing and future services.
