Voter Registration and Awareness Campaign
Columbus Metropolitan Library, Ohio
Innovation Synopsis
Columbus Metropolitan Library partnered with the Franklin County Board of Elections and the League of Women Voters on a voter registration campaign. Additionally, CML’s Board of Trustees approved a new policy enabling library staff members to get a full day off with pay so they can serve as precinct election officials.
Challenge/Opportunity
As we prepare to conduct this historic election during a national pandemic, communicating vital election information using electronic, online and non-traditional methods is essential to ensuring all Ohioans have the chance to vote in November. The pandemic necessitates less face-to-face interaction and a greater reliance on digital messaging to reach as many potential voters as possible.
Key Elements of Innovation
The partnership is supported through cross-promotional marketing efforts, earned-media collaboration and the availability of non-partisan digital and printed materials and information. A new policy was instituted allowing CML staff to serve as poll workers. Additionally, CML is hosting a number of non-partisan virtual events, including candidate forums and storytimes, focused on the importance of voting. All elected officials at the local, state and federal level within CML’s service area will be asked to participate.
Achieved Outcomes
The campaign provides information and education to CML customers and all Franklin County residents regarding the importance of registering to vote prior to the October 5 deadline, followed by messaging around voting in the November 3 general election. The goal is to maximize awareness, turnout and civic engagement in what will be an historic election fraught with challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. The number of impressions from the campaign will reach 5 million. CML staff have helped more than 200 individuals register to vote.
