VPL All Staff Wellness Conference
Vancouver Public Library
Innovation Synopsis
In November 2023, VPL held its first all-staff Wellness Conference in response to the increasing stress of the public service environment in the post-COVID-19 era. More than 400 staff attended sessions from internal and external presenters, visited creative showcases highlighting the talents of their colleagues and spent time connecting with one another.
Challenge/Opportunity
With public service placing increasing stress on frontline workers in recent years following the COVID-19 pandemic, VPL’s first Wellness conference had the following goals: to provide staff with resources to support their physical and mental well-being, showcase staff expertise, creativity, and talent, and provide an opportunity to connect and reconnect with one another away from the immediate pressures of the public service environment. With significant staff turnover since 2020, it was also a valuable opportunity for new staff to meet coworkers in an informal environment.
Key Elements of Innovation
The conference planning was entirely peer-led by VPL's Wellness Committee, which has the mandate of peer support for staff physical and mental well-being. Many of the sessions were presented by staff members based on their personal knowledge, experience, and interests, and creative showcases highlighted the artistic talent of staff. A half-day closure enabled over 400 staff to attend the conference.
Achieved Outcomes
More than 400 VPL staff were able to participate in the conference. The event included a traditional Indigenous welcome from Les George, a Tsleil-Waututh elder. The conference offered a broad range of formal programs and drop-in activities. Many of the sessions were delivered by library employees who generously shared their expertise and skills with their colleagues; external presenters also shared their expertise and knowledge with staff. Informal activities that included an art showcase and film screening ran throughout the conference, enabling staff to share their creative talents with colleagues. The conference both supported staff in their work environment, and provided new knowledge and skills to bring to public service. "A truly joyous gathering that gave me a feeling of being both enriched and inspired" was one of the many positive comments received afterward.
