We Stories

St. Louis County Library, Mo.

Equity and Inclusion

Innovation Synopsis

St. Louis County Library was inspired by a local nonprofit called We Stories to provide literature to help parents initiate discussions with their children about race and racism. The We Stories concept is to use the power of children’s literature to create conversation and change.

Challenge/Opportunity

Research of family habits indicates that the vast majority of white families rarely, if ever, talk about race at home. By age five, children see race as a major point of difference or distinction, even when it is not discussed. However, even slightly more exposure to other racial groups, even through children’s books, helps to counteract bias and discrimination.

Key Elements of Innovation

The We Stories collection consists of titles that directly address a monthly theme and companion titles that build on the theme. The library offers multiple copies of all of the titles in the We Stories collection such as, Celebrating the Skin You’re In and Separate Is Never Equal. We also offer We Stories kits that include a book, discussion questions and an activity for caregivers and children to work on together.

Achieved Outcomes

It is never too early to begin the discussion of race and racism with children. The books and kits paint diversity in a positive light and make children enjoy learning about different races, cultures and ethnicities. Since beginning the partnership in January of 2016, We Stories books have circulated over 15,000 times. We have added multiple copies of 61 titles and we offer 11 unique kits to engage children and families in the project.
