Xólotl: Dios Perro

Anythink Libraries

Health & Wellness | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

Working with Adams County and the Mexican Cultural Center of Denver, Anyhink hosted renowned artist Óscar Becerra Mora as he worked on Xólotl: Dios Perro, a monumental alebrije sculpture. Residents were invited to assist Becerra Mora in the papier-mâché process known as cartonería while learning more about Mexican folk art and culture.

Challenge/Opportunity

When more traditional indoor programs were paused due to COVID-19, the library sought an opportunity to provide meaningful cultural experiences that could be enjoyed in the library. Through partnerships, Anythink was able to bring the work of contemporary Óscar Becerra Mora to the library in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos. As an artist in residence, Becerra Mora was able to safely share his skills with the community.

Key Elements of Innovation

Becerra Mora worked on Xólotl: Dios Perro from Anythink’s flagship branch. Customers were encouraged to engage with the artist and assist with the sculpture. To accompany the Día de los Muertos display throughout the library, community members contributed to an altar (ofrenda) to commemorate the passing of loved ones, including those lost to COVID-19. Anythink also hosted a livestream Q&A with Becerra Mora, reaching audiences across the U.S. and Mexico.

Achieved Outcomes

Xólotl: Dios Perro remained on display at the library for months, serving as a popular attraction for arts and culture enthusiasts. Engagement for the experience was high, with community members participating in in-person opportunities and the community ofrenda. The project’s success reinforced the benefit of strategic partnerships in providing meaningful cultural opportunities for the community.
