Your Library Renewed – Public Information Campaign

St. Louis County Library, Mo.

Advocacy & Awareness

Innovation Synopsis

Finding ourselves at the beginning of a lengthy construction project, St. Louis County Library began an extensive marketing campaign to inform patrons and allay their concerns.

Challenge/Opportunity

In 2012, St. Louis County voters approved a tax increase to fund new facilities and upgrades to existing structures. The capital improvement campaign, called Your Library Renewed, or YLR, was split into three phases and scheduled to be completed in as many as 10 years. It is essential that information regarding the plan is effectively and efficiently communicated to patrons. When the first five branches closed for construction, the Your Library Renewed public information campaign began.

Key Elements of Innovation

Key elements include: • Website – A YLR portal with construction schedules, renderings, construction cameras and details about each project • Social media – Reminding patrons which branches to visit during construction and providing updates on reopenings • Emails – Reminding patrons of closure dates, directing them to the nearest branch and inviting them to reopenings • Displays – At all 20 SLCL branches, include a YLR banner, a FAQ brochure and a comment box

Achieved Outcomes

The YLR campaign has garnered much coverage from print, TV and radio media outlets and has won two awards: a National Association of County Information Officers Award of Excellence in Public Education Campaign and a Missouri Library Association Public Relations Achievement Award. Since February 2015 to present, SLCL has sent 46 emails out to 2,796,599 email addresses. The YLR website (called /building-projects and /your-library-renewed) has had a combined total of 747,646 page views.
