LEARN at SAPL ESL Field Trip
San Antonio Public Library, Texas
Innovation Synopsis
Twenty five students from all levels of English as a Second Language groups at three branch library LEARN at SAPL Centers participated in a field trip to the Institute of Texan Cultures Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate Museum. The trip gave students a chance to practice their English.
Challenge/Opportunity
The Institute explores the contributions of immigrant groups to Texas state history. The LEARN students were surprised to discover the different cultural groups that have migrated to Texas over time. They were able to connect to the stories in the museum because it is all about people who have immigrated to Texas, just like them. They were able to see the diverse groups that came before them and appreciate their similarities and differences.
Key Elements of Innovation
The field trip involved pre- and post-visit activities like practicing key vocabulary and concepts and learning historical background information. The students from two branch libraries rode the city bus with their instructors: an excellent opportunity to practice their English. Students were able to explore the museum, special exhibits and displays through both a guided and self-directed tour of the exhibit floor. They also learned about Hemisfair Park and its role in the 1968 World’s Fair.
Achieved Outcomes
The students completed a scavenger hunt and the first three finishers received prizes. One participant took the day off from work to attend the field trip. Another stated, "I never thought I would come to a place like this." The trip was made possible through a grant from the Library Foundation, and more field trips are planned for the future.
