Durham County Makerspace

Durham County Library, NC

Contact: Jill Wagy, jwagy@dconc.gov

Community Partners: SplatSpace

Description

The DCL Makerspace is initially targeted to teens in our community. It includes a 3D Printer and scanner, a milling machine, vinyl/fabric cutter, poster printer and Arduino kits. In conjunction with Durham’s local non-profit hacker space, SplatSpace, the library is teaching teens designing and building concepts for electronic devices and desktop fabrication both additive and subtractive

After the Summer Reading Program this year, the Makerspace’s 3D printer will be made available to the community. Our goal is to engage our community in the spirit of “making” by offering an open and inviting space for them to design and create.

Outcomes

The goal of the DCL Makerspace is an informal space provided to teach new skills, allow creation and sharing of ideas, make community connections, and give access to current technologies that would otherwise be unattainable by our patrons: durhamcountylibrary.org/2014/03/teen-tech-week.
