Versatile Program for Digital Skills Development
Kansas City Public Library, Mo.
Innovation Synopsis
KCPL navigates various barriers for KC adults who are on the wrong side of the digital divide by offering several options for learning – drop-in consultations, one-on-one appointments, classes and learning circles. Tech Coach Volunteers make this collection of services available consistently across the KCPL system.
Challenge/Opportunity
Everyone’s challenge is different. Offering classes alone cannot answer the needs of each patron. Whether a senior citizen wants to learn how to use their smartphone, a low-income patron needs to create an email account so they can complete an online job application or a professional wants to brush up on their Excel skills, KCPL’s digital skills learning program is designed to be flexible so that it is relevant to everyone.
Key Elements of Innovation
1. Tech Coach Volunteers are college students, retirees or corporate employees looking to give back to the community. They are versatile and equipped to help adults build digital literacy skills through a variety of formats at KCPL library branches and community partner sites. 2. With flexible scheduling and an adaptable curriculum for one-on-on sessions, classes learning circles, participants can choose a learning path that works for them.
Achieved Outcomes
KCPL’s digital literacy training programs prepare participants for jobs or more advanced education programs, easing hardships caused by a lack of basic tech skills. Program participants are expected to achieve the following targeted outcomes: 1. Gain basic digital literacy skills. 2. Become more confident in using and learning about technology. 3. Apply new digital skills to real life. 4. Continue to learn new digital skills.
